......A person cannot simply go on living in peace with a clear understanding of his fate, which the decay of his body brings him closer to every day. For a tolerable existence to be possible, he must be kept under anaesthesia and made to dream. Every country has its own methods for putting a person into a trance. You can build a culture so that people turn into frightened actors, performing life's success for one another. You can drown them in the consumption of small shiny boxes oozing worthless information. You can make them beat their foreheads against the floor before an icon. But such methods are unreliable and prone to failure. Russian technology, however, is the most humane of all, because it always works, without fail.
